CRISSCROSS

CRISSCROSS - 24.4.2009 - 30.8.2009
Curator: Richard Adam
Crisscross means “net” in English, but it also means “in all directions”. Roads parting in all directions, ropes crossed at regular distances. Fixed points capturing the reality and providing it with rules and order. This exhibition is also a sort of a net. It maps different trends in contemporary visual art in a criss-cross manner - on the level of a suspended picture and of an object. It is a “criss-cross”, both in terms of genre and region, and, in fact, also in terms of time. Or at least a suggestion of it.

The range of the pictures and objects on display is very wide. From expressive painting of Butzer and Hüppauff through conceptual works of Michal Škoda and Jan Maarten Voskuil to Christian Macketanz's paintings influenced by Nazarenism and Early Renaissance. The mid 1980’s in the work of Stanislav Diviš, the most topical trends in Jiří Černický's or Ondřej Kopal’s production or a look back at the paintings of Václav Stratil.
It is natural that such a wide selection can only be partial and illustrative. In spite of that, or perhaps because of that, we tried to map the artistic production of the individual artists from a broader perspective. The crossing and overlapping of the different trends and positions should be underpinned by more extensive presentation of the individual artists. The tradition of ”multiple exhibitions within one exhibition” is one of the most important points to which this exhibition refers, both by providing an overview of the artists’ work in time (e.g. Michal Škoda, Thilo Heinzmann), and by drawing a more detailed map of a specific creative period of an individual artist (e.g. Stanislav Diviš, Marcel Hüppauff). In any case, a broader presentation of the different artists is an important goal of the exhibition.
